Welcome to my new blog!!

Hi, and a gazillion welcomes to this first post on my new food, travel and nutrition science blog!

I am Valerie, and you can read more about me and the aims of this site on the About page. But in brief, I love food and I love travelling, and I love combining the two. I also like to know what is in what I’m eating and drinking, and whether it is doing me any good.

In this blog, I want to share with you my fascination and excitement about all these things. Its title tries to encapsulate the sense of pleasure derived from living well and healthily through good food and travel. For me, food and travel are highly sensory art forms. I aim to reconnect food with pleasure and its global origins, while also giving you in simple terms some of the best science from around the world about its impact on our health.

So, some posts will be about my adventures in food and travel. They will salute some of the wonderful variation and quirkiness and colour and richness in different countries, and their food and culture, that I have encountered along the way. And there will be some gorgeous recipes and hot travel tips!

Many other posts will be about the latest nutrition science. The Oxford dictionary declared ‘post-truth’ its word of the year in 2016. In the post-truth world of 2017, then, my posts will aim to make a very small contribution to fighting back – on the nutrition front, at least. They will aim to clear up some of the misinformation, hype, myths and confusion about how food choices are likely to be affecting my health and yours, and to explore the health of people in different countries in relation to their different national diets.

And finally, some posts will be about my own journey – both successes and many failures – in trying to eat healthily. It’s led me to be fascinated by the psychology of eating, and what influences people’s food choices.

Through trial and error over many years, I’ve found that a low-carb way of eating works best for me for health and weight control, so you can expect to hear a lot about that. But I am human, and sometimes, both good and bad happenings in life mean I don’t stick to it. And I also believe 100% in the positive mental health benefits of treating yourself from time to time. So I have no shame in my massive enthusiasm for a proper, classic Neapolitan wood-fired pizza, washed down with good Italian red wine.

In summary then, this blog will celebrate what is indulgent in food and travel, as well as what is virtuous (and they are often not mutually exclusive anyway). Two posts to follow soon, both inspired by my recent trip to Japan – one about the fantastically surreal world of Japanese Kit Kats, and the other about green tea – illustrate these two extremes – and two extremes of Japanese food culture – perfectly! Please sign up to be notified so you don’t miss these, or future, posts.

For now, it just remains for me to say thank you so much for visiting my blog – I hope that we will learn a lot together, inspire each other, and have fun. Comments are welcome, and if you enjoy it, please tell your friends!

  1. Hi Valerie, I’m off to America in three weeks, not known for their culinary delights! 😂 Good luck with your new venture, love to you and Mike Geraldine 😘

    1. Hi Geraldine, thanks so much for your good wishes and for signing up. I do hope you will enjoy the blog. And oooh in America, I had some fantastic food in New Orleans! Ever since I visited two years ago, I’ve been searching particularly for UK restaurants that might do their oysters chargrilled with garlic and Parmesan, hmmmmmm. But to no avail, so I guess I will have to make them myself! Which part of the US are you going to? Anyway, I hope you have a fabulous time and I’d love to hear about both your food and travel experiences when you get back. X
