Last month I saw – at Heaven nightclub in London – what will have been one of the last ever gigs by Psychic TV . Along with her band, performance artist and lead singer Genesis P-Orridge took to the stage during a period of remission from chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia. She reckons she now has between 6-24 months before it becomes terminal.
So this gig – already postponed from a year ago, when Genesis had been too sick to travel from the US – was a poignant one. A fabulous set was marked by wonderful musicianship by the band, with songs spanning the ethereal, to rocky numbers that were reminiscent of Lou Reed. And all were set against eye-popping, psychedelic, backdrop film graphics of skulls, devils, naked bodies and Queen Elizabeth I.
Here are my photo mementoes – of the gig, of Genesis, and of Psychic TV. And if you’re interested to know more, you can read about Genesis’ life and work in these recent New York Times and Guardian articles.
